Here are the comparative needs charts. The Filipinos are more influenced by the Chinese hierarchy. In fact, the Chinese hierarchy would be the model for a more pan-Asian needs hierarchy.

Belongingness is actually our most basic need. We can see this in the value we put upon extended family----which could be blood relatives but not necessarily so. As long as you belong to a family or a community, your most basic needs---food, shelter and clothing are assured. It is this most basic need that is violated when Filipinos leave for abroad. That is why OFWs have issues of "brokenness" to deal with. We are not used to surviving without the safety net of family and community. What many Filipinos abroad have done is form communities that they now consider "families".
